Observation Session – 25 January 2014

Location: Plateau de Valensole, France

Session duration: 2 nights

Sky conditions: Excellent transparency after midnight

Instruments:

  • 100mm apochromatic refractor
  • 7×50 binoculars
  • 200mm Newtonian reflector

Targets:

  • Jupiter
  • Mars
  • NGC 7000 (North America Nebula)
  • Betelgeuse

Observation notes:

The session alternated between lunar, planetary and deep-sky observation, with repeated checks against older notebook entries.

Observers noted subtle differences in contrast and brightness that led to extended discussion between sessions.

At least two observers independently reported that a star appeared to dim and brighten once, almost like a blink, too quickly for ordinary variable-star behaviour.
